Jan 25, 2021 · The Chartist's Cave is located in a prominent knoll to the east of Garn Fawr round cairn on the open, exposed moorland of Trefil Las at SO 1276 1523. The original name of the cave seems to have been Tylles Fawr (the Great Hole). In 1809, the cave came to the attention of Theophilus Jones, the author of the History of Brecknockshire:

Near the highest point of Trefil Ddu, part of Llangynidr Moor, this is the entrance to a network of subterranean caves originally called Tylles Fawr, and better known as the Chartist Cave after it was used by Chartist rebels as a weapons store prior to their attack on Newport later the same year. Pikes and possibly other weapons were secretly made and stockpiled in the Chartist Cave during the summer of 1839. They were subsequently carried by Tredegar Chartists on the great march on Newport on November 3rd - 5th 1839. Visitors to Newport can still see the holes in the pillars outside the Westgate near the bottom of Stow Hill.
