While in Carmel, Jorgensen helped in the creation of the Carmel Art Association. Equally facile in both oils and watercolors, Jorgensen is remembered best for his Yosemite, Carmel Coast, and Grand Canyon scenes. Chris Jorgensen ultimately retired to Piedmont, California, and remained actively painting there until his death in 1935.

Chris Jorgensen (1860-1935) was born in Norway and emigrated in 1870 to San Francisco at age ten with his widowed mother. As a teenager, Jorgensen started to make plein air watercolor sketches of local scenery, and these came to the attention of Virgil Williams, the Director of the School of Design.

When he was ten he and his mother came to San Francisco and in 1874 he was the first pupil to receive a scholarship at the newly-opened California School of Fine Arts. He graduated, became an instructor there and married a student, Angela Ghirardelli. They had two children: Virgil and Aimee.
