Miller was born and raised in Cincinnati. He received a BA in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1901, but returned to Cincinnati to pursue a career in art. At the Cincinnati Art Academy, he met Ella G. McCullough, a fellow art student,whom he married in 1914 and then lost to spinal meningitis in 1918.
