Clarkson Frederick Stanfield (1793–1867) (b Sunderland, 3 Dec. 1793; d London, 18 May 1867). English painter, best known for his marine subjects. From 1808 to 1816 he was a sailor, mainly in the merchant service, although he was in the Royal Navy for a time after being press-ganged.

He was born to an Irish-born father who was a poet, actor, and former seaman, and a mother who is said to have been an artist, who died in Clarkson’s youth. He was pressed into the Royal Navy in 1808 and discharged 6 years later on grounds of poor health.
