Born and raised in Glasgow, Craig McKechnie began his creative journey in the solitude of a monastery in the North of Scotland which cemented his dedication to art. After studying at Glasgow School of Art he began an involved and versatile teaching career in high security prisons, psychiatric units and schools, leading to the development of Delta Studios the Creative Centre.

He became Art Master at Irvine Royal Academy, Oban High School, and then at Ayr Academy from 1926 where he became Principal Art Teacher. He became the supervisor of Art in schools with the Ayrshire Education Authority, retiring in 1937.
