Born in 1920 in the town of Cidra in the province of Matanzas, Rafael Soriano manifested an early inclination for painting. After completing seven years of study at Havana’s prestigious Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro, he graduated in 1941 as Professor of Painting, Drawing and Sculpture. He then returned to Matanzas where he taught visual arts for close to two decades.

Soriano would be a key figure in the group, Pintores Concretos, which introduced and promoted conc rete and geometric abstraction in 1950s Cuba. He would work in this vocabulary until his departure from the island in 1962. The uprootedness and trauma of exile were profound for the artist; he was not able to paint for a couple of years.
