Sep 25, 2019 · Hannah Höch (German, 1889-1978) was an artistic and cultural pioneer. She co-invented photomontage with then-partner Raoul Hausmann. They were both members of the Berlin Dada anti-art movement. While on vacation, they found photos and postcards at a shop that was selling memorabilia – altered photos – from World War I German soldiers.

Mar 12, 2019 · After the war was over, in 1915, Höch met Hausmann, who introduced her to his circle of Dada artists and became her lover. Despite Höch’s significant skill, Hausmann’s cohort didn’t take her seriously, and nearly rejected her participation in the First International Dada Fair in Berlin in 1920, a major inaugural showcase for the movement.

Being a woman Dada artist in Berlin in the early 20th C, Höch, probably had to constantly fight off gender discrimination in a largely white male dominated arena of the creative arts. Intuitive, politically-minded and aesthetically balanced, she put her resistance across through her visual art, often in a satirical, and somewhat sardonic manner.

Apr 29, 2013 · Hannah Hoch (born Anna Therese Johanne Hoch on November 1, 1899) remains a well-known member of the Berlin Dada movement, and was among the first prominent artists to work with photo-montage techniques. Hoch attended the College of Arts and Crafts in Berlin from 1912 to 1914, during the tense lead-up to the first World War.
