After the death in 1971 of Nobel Peace Prize winner and United Nations diplomat Dr. Ralph Bunche, Daniel LaRue Johnson proposed a public artwork at the United Nations to honor his memory. Johnson, whose father went to high school with Bunche in Los Angeles, had become friends with the diplomat after moving to New York in the late 1960s.
