On National Indigenous Peoples Day (Sunday, June 21st) we heard the story of the Highlands United Church talking stick, carved for us by Coast Salish artist, Darren Yelton. In this video, Darren shared with us the biography of the stick and a little about his background as an artist.

Born in 1960 in to the Coast Salish Nation on the Stawamus reservation in BC. Neil is a self taught artist beginning to carve at the age of twelve. He cites his grandmother, Sadie Baker, of Nanaimo, as his inspiration. Neil specializes in wood and creates hand carved rattles, totem poles, plaques and masks.
