David Allan (13 February 1744 – 6 August 1796) was a Scottish painter and illustrator, best known for historical subjects and genre works. He was born at Alloa in central Scotland. On leaving Foulis's academy of painting at Glasgow (1762), after seven years' successful study, he obtained the patronage of Lord Cathcart and of Erskine of Mar, on whose estate he had been born.

David Allan (1744–1796) (b Alloa, 13 Feb. 1744; d Edinburgh, 6 Aug. 1796). Scottish portrait and genre painter. From about 1767 to 1777 he lived in Rome, where he studied with Gavin Hamilton and won a prize for history painting at the Accademia di S. Luca. In 1777 he moved to London, then in 1780 settled in Edinburgh as a painter of portraits and conversation pieces.
