English choral conductor and countertenor David Bates studied at Salisbury Cathedral and the Royal Academy of Music, pursuing an operatic career. He also studied at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, and worked with John Eliot Gardiner, Marc Minkowski, and Nicholas McGegan, before forming La Nuova Musica, a period ensemble based in London.

David Bates (1840 – 1921) was an English landscape artist who painted in oils and watercolour. Bates was born in Cambridge and from 1855 worked as a porcelain painter at the Royal Worcester porcelain works in Worcester - where he came to specialise in painting flowers.
