David Bowser was a self-taught African-American artist who began his career as a sign painter in Philadelphia. His early paintings included landscapes, portraits, emblems and banners for local organizations, such as a firemen's group. His most noted works include portraits of President Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist John Brown.

David Bustill Bowser (January 16, 1820, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – June 30, 1900, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) was an African-American ornamental artist and portraitist. Bowser attended a private school run by his cousin Sarah Mapps Douglass and studied art with his cousin Robert Douglass, Jr., an African-American pupil of Thomas Sully.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, David Bustill Bowser was a grandson of Cyrus Bustill, a former slave who purchased his freedom and went on to become a founding member of Philadelphia's Free African Society, and a son of oyster house proprietor Jeremiah Bowser, whose freedom had been purchased by a group of Philadelphia Quakers after he had been arrested for being a fugitive slave.
