David Gainford David Gainford was born in South Africa and came to England with his parents at the age of four. When David was nine, he won two silver medals in a national competition for drawings of a magpie and the leaves of a plane tree. At 14, he won a scholarship to art school where he was tutored in drawing by John Pisani.
