David Henry Souter (1862-1935) was a cartoonist, painter and art editor. Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, he trained as a painter and decorator and then as an artist. After working as a newspaper illustrator in Scotland and South Africa he arrived in Melbourne in 1885, moving permanently to Sydney in 1897.

David Henry Souter contributed to popular Australian journals such as The Bulletin and The Lone Hand, as well as illustrating over 50 books. This is regarded as one of Australia's finest graphic satirists. His largest surviving work is the allegorical mural painted between 1920 and 1934 depicting the emergence of the lifesavers as an icon of Australian manhood.
