David Olivant was born in 1958 and grew up in Watford, a non-descript town on the northwest edge of London. He was awarded a BA in Art from the Falmouth School of Art in England in 1980 after which he studied for three years at the Royal College of Art in London where he received an MA in Painting in 1984. Following graduation he was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship to work in India.

Artist Statement The main themes that emerge from my art concern the struggle to make genuine contact with any other locus of consciousness, including our own. My work constantly fuses disparate elements and levels of reality and in doing so seeks to generate unfamiliar emotional states that are created by radical ontological uncertainty.

Feb 15, 2021 · On February 11, Stan State hosted an Artist Talk with artist and former professor, David Olivant. Olivant’s former students, colleagues, and admirers of his work gathered on Zoom to celebrate the opening of his current exhibition, “There Will Be Time,” which is available for viewing on Stan State’s virtual galleries until February 26.

David Olivant is a mixed media artist whose art bridges the realms of ceramics, painting, drawing, and photography. This exhibit presents a new aspect of his oeuvre, where his common practice of making sculpture out of found objects, coupled with exquisite drawings of subjects from life and art history, is ground zero for the creation of a series of large format prints.
