David was born in 1957, the tail end of the baby boomer generation, a mythical age of American pride, prowess, and social mobility. He expressed his artistry at a young age. His father, a physician and first-generation American, had little familiarity or interest in the arts; he believed them a clever hobby, but a profession in the arts, lacking in appropriate stature, scholarship, and prestige.
