An artist of immense vitality and verve, David van Nunen’s work, over the past two decades, has contributed to the formation of a fresh vision of the Australian landscape. Acclaimed as one of Australia’s outstanding colourists, van Nunen is renowned for his vivid and evocative images of Sydney Harbour and its foreshores, as well as Australia’s wilderness areas, national parks and botanic gardens.
David Noonan’s collage works, films, paintings, sculptural objects, tapestries and installations are characterised by a complex layering of found historical and contemporary images. In his work, he is interested in the liminal and temporal; in the dialogue between figuration and abstraction and a de-linear sense of time; in ambiguities, contradictions and in-between spaces.

In 1980, David van Nunen was awarded a six-month tenure as artist-in-residence at the Power Studio, Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, under the aegis of the University of Sydney. After studies at Newcastle Art School and a brief trip to New York in 1979, this was the artist's first journey to Europe.
