Born Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi c. 1386 in Florence, Italy, he is thought to have learned stone carving as a teenager from sculptors working on the Duomo. Around 1405, Donatello joined the workshop of Lorenzo Ghiberti, and later traveled to Rome alongside Brunelleschi to study ancient architecture and sculpture.
