As a teen and young adult, Burnham drew horses. “I have a relative who ran race horses. He asked me if I’d be interested in doing a painting of a horse that had done well.” Through his time at the Vancouver School of Art and at the University of Victoria, Burnham studied with noted Canadian painters Toni Onley and Don Jarvis.
