Jim Edenshaw was born on Haida Gwaii and is part of the Raven clan. He was the great-grandson of the renowned Haida artist, Charles Edenshaw, who was famous for his argillite carvings and his silverwork. Edenshaw began carving in 1979 when he was 24. In the 1980s he moved to Vancouver where he learned from, and worked with, a variety of Northwest Coast artists.
