Jean-Édouard Vuillard was born on 11 November 1868 in Cuiseaux (Saône-et-Loire), where he spent his youth; in 1878 his family moved to Paris. Vuillard's father, a retired army captain, was 27 years older than his mother Marie Vuillard (née Michaud).
