Living mainly in rural England, his close association with the natural landscape has supported his combination of work as composer, painter and ornithologist. In 1964 he studied under Peter Racine Fricker at Morley College, and then privately with Alexander Goehr.

Cowie was born in Birmingham on 17 August 1943. He began to compose at the early age of 11 years. Later, he had composition lessons with Alexander Goehr and Witold Lutoslawski as well encouragement from Michael Tippett. Cowie has had several academic postings including lectureships at Lancaster, Kassel and Wollongong Universities.
