G. Effie Smith (7867-1960) broke the mould of having to seek artistic success elsewhere. She was born in Cumberland, near Ottawa, and came to Guelph when her father, Rev. J.C. Smith, became the minister of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Her mother, born Emily Petrie, was a gifted artist.
