Shoumatoff was born in Kharkov, Ukraine, the daughter of a Russian general. Privately educated, she developed an interest in painting. In 1917, she came to the United States with her husband on a mission for the Russian government; they decided to remain after the Bolshevik Revolution, which occurred in October of that year.

Even so, Shoumatoff was among the most successful and productive artists of her time having painted over 2000 portraits. Born in Kharkov, Russia in 1888 to General Nicholas Avinoff and his wife, she had a comfortable childhood living in a large, stately country home in the Ukraine.
