A compulsive painter, Emil Kosa Jr. would often paint for three or four hours after dinner each night and spend most of his weekends outdoors, painting with watercolors or oils. Alexander Cowie was his Los Angeles agent and the Macbeth gallery sold his work in New York City.

Kosa was a renowned Czech artist who studied at The Prague Academy and The California Art Institute, as well as a few other European art institutions. This watercolor drawing reminds me of a Hemingway-esque romance for the ocean found in his novels such as The Old Man and The Sea; this was one of my favorites to read when I was growing up.

For the late, great Robert Rauchenberg and others like him, it could mean finding a stuffed goat and an old tire and making a quirky piece out of it. For me, it means finding a mid-century watercolor lithograph at a thrift store for $6. That’s what happened a few weeks ago when I had a little folding money in my pocket.
