Emily Kame Kngwarreye is one of Australia's most significant contemporary artists. Emily was born circa 1910 in a remote desert area of Utopia, approx 230 kilometres north-east of Alice Springs in Central Australia. Emily first saw a white person when she was about 9 years old.

Emily Kame Kngwarreye was born around 1910 at Alhalkere (Soakage Bore). Emily is an Eastern Anmatyerre speaker and one of the senior artists of the Utopia-n Art Movement. She was adopted by Jacob Jones an important lawman in the Anmatyerre community and worked as a stock hand on pastoral properties in this area, showing her forceful independence.

Emily Kngwarreye emerged in the 1990s as one of Australia's most important contemporary painters. She painted her country, Alhalkere, north of Alice Springs in the traditional Anmatyerre way for decades before batik and then acrylic and canvas materials were introduced to the artists at Utopia, Alice Springs in the late 1980s.
