She settled down with her husband Bill, also an artist, in Stonington, Maine, where she painted, created ceramics and mosaics, and designed architectural house plans.

Am. 1904 - 2003. Emily Muir moved to Stonington, Maine in 1939 with her sculptor husband, William Muir, whom she had met at the Art Institute of Chicago. Ms. Muir was the first woman to serve on President Dwight D. Eisenhower's National Commission on Fine Arts, and she was later appointed to the advisory committee for the Kennedy Center for the performing Arts by President Richard Nixon.
