Eric Thake was born in Melbourne in 1904. Before the Second World War he was apprenticed to a process engraving company and worked as a commercial artist during 1925 and 1926. Thake attended night classes at the National Gallery School, Melbourne, in 1922, and from 1925 to 1928 he studied part-time with George Bell.

Eric Thake (1904-1982) served as Official Artist, R.A.A.F. War History Section from late 1944 to April 1946. He was the second combatant artist appointed by the R.A.A.F. in World War II.
