Biography. Bidjigal artist and elder Esme Timbery comes from a long line of shell workers from the Aboriginal mission community of La Perouse in Sydney. La Perouse Aboriginal Mission, on the shores of Botany Bay, was officially gazetted as an Aboriginal reserve in 1895, and became one of the first government-sanctioned missions designed to segregate Aboriginal people from mainstream Australia.

Born on Hill 60 in Port Kembla in 1931, Esme is an artist and Bidjigal woman. She has been collecting shells since the age of five at La Perouse where she lives. For decades she has continued the family tradition of Indigenous shellwork glued on to cardboard, wood and fabric.

The shellwork for which Bidjigal artist Esme Timbery is known was introduced to Aboriginal people in La Perouse to the south-east of Sydney by Christian missionaries in the 1880s. However, prior to this Aboriginal people in the area used seashells to make fish hooks, jewellery (for both men and women), and religious and ritualistic objects.
