Emma Timbery (c.1842 - 26 November 1916) was a Mulgoa Aboriginal Australian shellworker and matriarch. She was also known as the "Queen of the Illawarra", "Queen of La Perouse" or "Granny Timbery." Her shellwork became part of a family tradition that continues to the present day. The shellwork for which Bidjigal artist Esme Timbery is known was introduced to Aboriginal people in La Perouse to the south-east of Sydney by Christian missionaries in the 1880s. However, prior to this Aboriginal people in the area used seashells to make fish hooks, jewellery (for both men and women), and religious and ritualistic objects.
