The younger son of the artist William Widgery, he was educated at the Cathedral School, Exeter and later studied at the Exeter school of Art, then subsequently at South Kensington and in Antwerp. He became very active in municipal affairs and was Mayor of Exeter from 1903 to 1904, he was also chairman of many committees and a captain in the 'Volunteers.

Artist Frederick John Widgery (1861-. 1942) F.J. Widgery was the son of William Widgery (1822- 1893) who was also a well known landscape painter. Frederick John Widgery produced landscape and coastal scenes, mainly in gouache, with most of the subjects being local scenes in the Devon and Cornwall area. He was born in 1861 and studied at the Exeter School of Art, in London and in Antwerp.

Widgery (pictured right in 1901) liked to be known as the man who put the letters FJ into Exeter’s car registrations. He was mayor when the letters were allocated in 1904 but the fact that they were the mayor’s initials was just a coincidence.
