A. A. Farland Artist Grand No. 2 $1995.00; sn. 751, ca. 1900s. a very early, Farland banjo with 12-1/2 inch wooden rim showing saw cuts on the inside. Unusual bracket system which loops under the lower edge of the rim. Five piece maple neck with ornate, floral inlay in the peghead and the fingerboard. The banjo has a 28-1/2 inch scale and 29 frets in all including the large cantilevered extension.

The lettering appears to have been done by a fountain pen or similar and is not very uniform. I have seen this on photos of several Artist Grands as well as banjo on the photo. It does not, however, appear in the reproduction 1915 Farland catalogue issued by the American Banjo Fraternity in their 1980 winter issue of their newsletter "5 Stringer".
