The Feast of Herod is usually dated to the mid-to-late 1630s which is towards the end of the artist’s career. It was probably commissioned by an extremely wealthy Flemish merchant, Gaspar Roomer, who was based in Naples but made regular visits to his native Antwerp.

Noted for its pioneering use of perspective, the sculpture, measuring just 60 by 60 centimetres, depicts the beheading of John the Baptist after Salome has asked Herod Antipas for his head on a platter.
