Aug 08, 2012 · I just joined the Owners Group. # 1910 is my banjo. I bought it in an auction a few years ago. Since Fender "serial numbers" are meaningless, I had to guess at the mfg date. I went with "late sixties" because of the slim neck and ball-top reso screws. I bought a new artist in 1973 that also had the slim neck, but it had the knurled screws.

Unfortunately, the serial numbers of the 60's and 70's-era Fender banjos weren't issued chronologically, so you really can't estimate the date from the serial number. I have an Artist I bought new in 1972, and although its serial number is in the 4200's (with no letter prefix), I've heard of older ones with higher serial numbers.

My Artist is a 1968 with Serial no.5000 Bought at a local music store in 1973 by me.but that dosen't mean that your banjo is older,a friend of mine bought and artist new in 1976 with a serial no. 4989. so they did not number them in any order by years made.
