Nov 26, 2015 · The 20th-century artists known as the Kiowa Five (or Six) doubtless drew inspiration from such works, but their chosen medium was watercolor, and they offered a broader range of expression. They worked in flat style, their scenes lacking perspective, the result of leaving the background empty and rendering full figures of people using bold colors.

The five most commonly known artists in the group are Jack Hokeah (1900–1969), Monroe Tsatoke (1904–37), Spencer Asah (1906– 54), James Auchiah (1906–74), and Stephen Mopope (1900–1974). The sixth member was a woman, Lois Smoky (1907–81). Painting was an important and honored aspect of traditional Kiowa culture.

By 1928 the "Five Kiowa Artists" were featured in exhibition in Prague, Czechoslovakia. A now-famous portfolio of silk-screened prints was published in France in 1929. In addition to painting, Mopope was a flute player, an avid dancer, and a farmer.
