Oct 20, 2010 · My only bluegrassy mandolin is my '83 Flatiron A5-2. Serial number starts with 83 so I think you are on the right track. Main diff is binding and diffrerent inlay on headstock. A5-2s became A5 Artists later with the fancier gold-plated hardware. Usually plain A5s havew less flamed backs but yours looks plenty flamed. They are great mandolins.

1995 Flatiron A5 Artist Mandolin (Serial No. 95072333) Near mint condition, ice tea sunburst lacquer finish. This was the top of the line for Flatiron A style mandolins. This one was built in Bozeman, MT, by the same luthiers that built the Gibson mandolins, and the label is signed by Bruce Weber.
