Oct 20, 2010 · My only bluegrassy mandolin is my '83 Flatiron A5-2. Serial number starts with 83 so I think you are on the right track. Main diff is binding and diffrerent inlay on headstock. A5-2s became A5 Artists later with the fancier gold-plated hardware. Usually plain A5s havew less flamed backs but yours looks plenty flamed. They are great mandolins.

Jan 31, 2020 · My own Flatiron was a Carlson A5 Artist, bought new in ‘86 (I think). That was my first mandolin, and it yhad a problem. The truss rod channel had been routed too deeply and the truss rod was breaking through the back of the peg head. Flatiron eventually put a new neck on it, but only after giving me the runaround for a couple of years.
