Fra Filippo Lippi, (born c. 1406, Florence [Italy]—died October 8/10, 1469, Spoleto, Papal States), Florentine painter in the second generation of Renaissance artists. While exhibiting the strong influence of Masaccio (e.g., in Madonna and Child, 1437) and Fra Angelico (e.g., in Coronation of the Virgin, c. 1445), his work achieved a distinctive clarity of expression.

Fra Filippo Lippi (1406 - October 8, 1469), also called Lippo Lippi, was an Italian painter of the Italian Quattrocento (15th century) school. Lippi was born in Florence to Tommaso, a butcher. Both his parents died when he was still a child. Mona Lapaccia, his aunt, took charge of the boy.

Filippo was put into the Carmelite monastery in Florence in 1421 by his aunt, who had taken over the care of the youngster but wanted him off her hands. Lippi became yet another great Florentine painter and produced many memorable renaissance artworks.
