Frances Anne (Beechey) Hopkins was born in England, the daughter of Rear Admiral F.W. Beechey and the grand daughter of Sir William Beechey RA, a highly respected portrait artist. In 1858 she married Edward Martin Hopkins, a world traveller. Her husband was a widower and had three sons, to whom Frances Anne became very devoted.
