Frances Loring was a Canadian sculptor of American descent. Her outstanding architectural designs, war memorials and monuments quickly earned her a reputation as one of the first women known for her sculpture in the country. Loring helped change the way the medium was viewed in Canada and was instrumental in expanding the role of women in art.

Born in Wardner, Idaho in 1887, Frances Loring studied art in her native United States, as well as in many European cities, before settling in Canada in 1912. Her decision to move to Toronto was motivated, in part, by a desire to participate in the artistic development of a young country.

Frances Norma Loring studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Geneva, Switzerland (1901-1903), with Carl Guttner in Munich (1903), at the Academie Colarossi (1904-06), at the Chicago Art Institute in 1906 and Art Students League in New York in 1910. It was at the Chicago Art Institute that she met Florence Wyle.
