    FRANCES SENSKA – (1914 - ) Often called “the mother of Montana art,” ceramic artist Frances Senska has lived a rich life, from her roots in West Africa to her idyllic location on the banks of Bozeman Creek in Montana. Her teaching career spanned over 30 years, and her students include such pivotal artists as Rudy Autio and Peter Voulkos.

    Frances Senska was born in 1914. She was raised in Cameroon where her parents were working as missionaries. Her father earned his way through medical school as a cabinet maker and craftsman, eventually teaching his daughter how to use his tools. Senska was home-schooled by her mother, who was a trained teacher.
