Francis Barraud studied at Heatherley's Academy and later at the Royal Academy Schools where he won a silver medal for life drawing. For a short time he was also at the Beaux Arts, Antwerp. he first began exhibiting in 1878 he is now perhaps best known for his most famous painting, his Master's Voice, which was sold to the Gramophone Company in 1899 and is still the familiar image of Hmv Records.

One of several of a family artists which include brother Charles Decimus Barraud (1822-1897), others were Allan Barraud (1849-1913) and Charles James Barraud (1843-1894). Francis visited New Zealand on the 'Northfleet' in 1842 and some of his watercolours were exhibited with the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts 1889-1897.
