During the First World War, he was appointed an official war artist by Charles Masterman, the head of the War Propaganda Bureau, and serviced on the Western Front. In 1929 Dodd was appointed as a trustee of the Tate Gallery, and elected to the Royal Academy in 1935. In 1949, he took his own life.

Francis Dodd was a painter of realistic portraits, landscapes and genre, and etcher. Dodd studied at Glasgow School of Art, after which he visited Paris, Italy and later Spain. He settled in Manchester 1895, then moved to London in 1904. Dodd exhibited at the New English Art Club from 1894, and was a member from 1904.
