Stephen Gilbert (15 January 1910 – 12 January 2007) was a painter and sculptor from Scotland. He was one of the few British artists fully to embrace the avante garde movement in Paris in the 1950s. Born 1910. Died 2007. Nationality English. Born in Fife, Gilbert was the grandson of the sculptor Sir Alfred Gilbert, who made the famous Eros statue in Piccadilly Circus. Stephen Gilbert studied at the Slade School of Art from 1929-32 and exhibited regularly in London in the 1930s.

Artwork page for ‘Untitled’, Stephen Gilbert, 1949 This lithograph is related to an untitled painting of 1948, which depicts an insect-like form with a dark blue body and brilliant red wings. The triangular head, eyes and mouth are also distinctive and typical of the fantastic imagery that Gilbert explored until 1950. It was images like these that attracted the attention of the CoBrA group.
