Francis William Topham (Leeds, England 15 April 1808 – 31 March 1877 Córdoba, Spain) was an English watercolourist and engraver. His early in life he was articled to an uncle who was a writing engraver. Around 1830 he came to London, and at first found employment in engraving coats-of-arms.

He later completed his studies at the Royal Academy College and then moved to Paris to study with Gleyre. Our painting depicts the preparations for an annual festival that Topham must have witnessed during one of his travels.

ARTIST Francis William (Frank) Topham, watercolour painter, was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, on 15 April 1808, the son of Richard Topham (1781–1834), pawnbroker, and his wife, Elizabeth Rawson (1784–1861). Apprenticed to his uncle, Samuel Topham, he was taught to engrave.

Condition report: The painting is in good, original condition with strong colours. There are some minor spots of foxing across the painting most notably in the top right hand corner.
