Franz Walter Bergmann was born on August 6, 1898, in Dimling, Austria, a town northwest of Vienna. After serving in World War I for three years, he enrolled in the National Academy of Art in Vienna and embarked on a seven-year course of study, focusing on figure painting and portraiture.
