WAR Brangwyn was not an official war artist, although he produced over 80 poster designs during the first World War. The compositions and details were based largely on his experience of the Messina earthquake which he saw in 1909 when visiting his friend R H Kitson in Sicily.

Frank Brangwyn received artistic training from his father, and later from the architect and artist William Morris.

In the 1900s Brangwyn began designing furniture, textiles, ceramics and other media. He was made an Official War artist in World War I, gaining repute through his posters, and was further recognised with an RA appointment (1919) and a knighthood (1941). Brangwyn was given a major retrospective exhibition at the Royal Academy, the first time this honour had been accorded to a living artist.

Frank Brangwyn (1867–1956) (b Bruges, 13 May 1867; d Ditchling, Sussex, 11 June 1956). British painter, printmaker, draughtsman, and designer, the son of a Welsh architect who specialized in church furnishings and who was working in Belgium at the time of the boy's birth. In 1882–4 Brangwyn served an apprenticeship with William Morris, and like his master he was active in a variety of fields.
