Frank Virgil Dudley was known as a the ‘painter of the Dunes’. He first visited the Northern Indiana Dunes on Lake Michigan in 1911, and was instantly fascinated with them. He eventually built a cabin there in 1921, paid for with painting and prize proceeds from the Art Institute of Chicago. Dudley was born in Delavan, Wisconsin in 1868.
Frank Virgil Dudley was born November 14, 1868, in Delavan, Wisconsin. He died on March 5, 1957, in Chicago, Illinois. Known as the "Painter of the Dunes", Dudley first visited the Indiana Dunes on Lake Michigan in 1912. In 1921 he built a cabin there and was determined to paint full time.
