Artists policy and attending the Art Institute of Chicago from where he graduated. While in Chicago he painted and made model sail boats, an interest he acquired in the German Merchant Marine at the age of 16.

After 1945 Darge began making annual sketching trips to West Texas and New Mexico. He became especially enamored of the Davis Mountains and the Big Bend region which are often the setting for his cowboy and ranching paintings. Commentary by Michael R.
