Fred Scherer was born in Queens, New York on March 1, 1915 and grew up in South Ozone Park, NY. Starting in his teens, he was mentored by his elder brother Bill, who taught him how to draw the landscape and paint in oils. They often went out to sketch and paint in Cold Spring Harbor.
